Smith & Wesson SWATMBS Swat Medium Serrated Assisted Opening Knife, Black Reviews
This knife is among the best I have owned. The initial pull on the stud to open the knife is a bit stiff, but seems to get better after a few pulls. The non slip side feels like 100 grit sandpaper. I purchased a SWAT knife back in 2000 and still have it, so I know these are well built. This knife is well built, sturdy, sharp and priced right. Smith & Wesson makes a great product!
PROS:Opens smooth and quick.Sharp Blade that holds its edge wellTwo ways to open (thumb or index finger)Sandpaper GripSafety (keeps the assisted open from opening in your pocket)CONS:Could be slightly shorter for pocket carryUPDATE (1/27/2011): I've had the knife and carried it in my pocket daily. Yesterday the knife got stuck open and after wiggling it around, it snapped closed (not on my fingers luckily). Now the safety doesn't work at all. I'm going to see if the warranty will cover it, but I'll have to pay to mail it to them, and include payment of $[...] for return shipping... lame.
This knife is absolutely perfect! It has a simple but effective locking mechanism, and when you want to open the blade you can either use the thumb stud on the blade or pull a small lever on the back with your finger. The torsion-assist takes over as soon as you move the blade out a few degrees, or pull the lever all the way down, and has enough power to fully open the blade into a locked-open position every time!If you want a good assisted opening knife, I recommend this knife right here. Every knife I've ever gotten from Smith and Wesson has been the highest quality knife I've ever had (no joke) and always come with an extremely sharp edge. Seriously, if I could give this knife more than 5 stars I would.*Edit* I forgot to mention that the grip on this knife is the same as the gritty surface on skateboards. It doesn't feel very rough, but gives GREAT grip, even if your hands are wet or greasy or whatever.
Knife was delivered on 11/02/10 and I love the thing. Decently sharp right out of the box. Opens quickly with just a small press on the release. The safety is a nice option too. Only one problem: As of 12/18/10, about 6 1/2 weeks after I received the knife, the assisted opening mechanism has stopped working completely. Nothing happens when I press the release switch. Feels like something broke inside, no resistance on the release switch at all anymore. Going to Contact Smith & Wesson because I have heard rumor that all their products have a lifetime guarantee, so we'll see how it goes. Hopefully they can fix or replace this knife for free because I really do like the thing a lot.
I purchased this knife for my son who is a lifeguard at a state reservoir that can have ocean-like waves in the afternoon. He needed a knife to quickly cut through rope and nylon cord. This knife is unbelievably sharp. It is easy to operate with only one hand and slices through rope like butter. Caution should be taken knowing that you can easily cut yourself and not know it. The rough handle will be perfect in slippery, wet conditions.
I've owned this knife for several years now and I felt I should write a review on it. Here are a couple categories to break it down into.Assisted Opening Technology: The spring loaded blade opens perfectly every time and always engages the liner lock. Having two ways of opening this knife is very convenient. The small lever in the back makes the blade seem to magically open. However, after a year or so, depending on how often you use the knife, the spring weakens and is likely to break. You can buy replacement springs but it's almost not worth it due to how cheap this knife is.Safety Mechanisms: The blade of this knife is secured with a liner lock while open. This is a very secure type of lock and it is very easy to disengage when you need to close the knife. The safety mechanism on the handle works whether the blade is open or closed. This means you can have two means of locking the blade while open. However I don't feel that this is at all necessary since I've never had the blade break through the liner lock.Handle: The handle of this knife is very comfortable. The "sandpaper" material on the sides holds your hand in place but is not abrasive. It will not scratch your skin like rough sandpaper or skateboard griptape. The placement of the safety lever on the handle is perfectly placed for your thumb to operate it (if you're right handed). However I have heard lefties just use their middle finger to switch it on and off. The grooving on the blade keeps your thumb in place fairly well but the downward slope of the blade encourages your thumb to slip. The Clip: The clip is very strong and is held to the handle by 3 screws. When clipped to a jean pocket, the clip pinches the fabric against the "sandpaper" material. However, on the clip side of the knife, the "sandpaper" material is actually plastic, not metal, and is less abrasive on clothing. when clipped to a pocket, the handle of the knife sticks out a little bit, making it less concealed, but also easier to grab.Blade: This blade is ok. I bought the version of the knife without serrations so I can't review those. However I can review the smooth part. I found that my knife blade was able to get a razor sharp edge (able to easily cut through paper) after a quick sharpening. Unfortunately, after a long day of work (cutting boxes occasionally) the knife lost quite a bit of sharpness. The knife was shipped to me razor sharp but the quality of the steel makes it lose its edge rather quickly.I gave this knife 4 stars because it was a great knife except for the durability of the spring and the lower quality steel of the blade. But for the price, this can't be beat. I would definitely recommend this knife, especially to people who want to try using the assisted opening technology. Just don't expect this knife to blow a $100 blade out of the water.
Strong and fast. Pocket clip is on the folding end (opposite of most). Sandpaper grip on non-clip side. Clip not reverseable. Looks good also. Good Value
