I am using this with the Honeywell RCWL300A1006 Premium Portable Wireless Door Chime and Push Button. The sensor is located indoors in an office with a very narrow temperature range away from any HVAC equipment so in theory this should be its optimal operating environment. First of all, DO NOT BUY the Honeywell RPWL3045A1003/A Wireless Premium Portable Converter/Extender/Push Button like the description tells you to. Not only is it not required, but it also doesn't work with this motion detector. The sensor can be paired with the chime directly just like a push button. Honeywell's marketing department should probably use their products before creating a description.As a completely wireless motion detector this device sounded like the perfect addition to an office doorbell system. The theory was that when someone opens the main door a chime sounds. In practice, things didn't work the way I expected them to. First, this motion sensor forces a particular chime sound (high-pitched movie-radar sounding noise) instead of one of the selectable chimes for the push buttons and you can't change it like you can for the push buttons. Second, installation was significantly over-complicated. It has a selectable "day/night" mode which has nothing to do with day and night, but changes how the sensor works (must have been a mistranslation from the actual manufacturer to Honeywell.) It also has a light/dark on/off adjustment that in theory allows you to disable the sensor when there is a certain amount of ambient light, but for my application it just added 10 minutes to the install trying to figure out how to get it to work at all (the instructions say that when you install the battery, the red LED behind the sensor cover lights up, but in reality it only lights when motion is detected, the two "light sensor" dials are set a certain way, and the correct amount of ambient light is present.) Basically, when you set it up make sure that both dials are set to the least restrictive settings to disable the light sensor (good luck finding a screw driver the right size.)Finally, the sensor itself isn't linear. Basically, there are very sensitive areas and dead zones and those areas are not in a logical pattern. You might have a sensitive area 10 feet in front and 5 feet to the left of the sensor, a dead zone 10 feet in front and 10 feet to the left, and another sensitive area 5 more feet to the left. Basically, the lens is poorly designed or the LED is blocking the IR emitter/detector. It works well enough that I would probably use it again if the battery lasts for 12 months like the instructions say it does, but not well enough that I will recommend it to others.
If you have any experience reading directions for items you purchase, this should not be a problem for you to configure. If getting up on a ladder is a problem, then you should not be installing yourself, you could fall and kill yourself!The signal noise is alerting, just what we wanted for the rear area of patio that is 30'X15' in day time. 3 acres of deer do not disturb us at night. You have to adjust the shade, angle of the lense and the sensitivity. Once it is configured to your liking it works great! It has been in use for approx. 1 year no problems!
Bought this with the door chime/Works well at front entrance/Do not have a problem with the sound as this is to alert you and not to sound as a chime/Purchased another identical door chime and found 1 sensor works with both chimes so I could expand door bell and motion sensor sounds to different regions of the house.Sensor can be adjusted for sensitivity and includes a cover to eye to decrease the motion sensing area.
Works great for my application, letting me know when someone drives up my driveway. So far, no false alarms at night or day.I recommend linking it to your Chime unit prior to mounting. Just follow the instructions, very easy to do. No adapter was needed.
This product could be made a lot easier to use.They could have made the selection of day/night mode and ambient light remote-controlled either through IR or RF beam.As is in order to adjust the light and select day and night mode you have to physically reach the unit and turn the dials with a small screwdriver.To set the switch from day to night you have to open the unit up and slide a switch which may not be very easy if the unit is mounted high up or on a surface that requires a ladder.I think consumers would have paid a little more for remote control of these features.The detector does its job and detects objects, but the adjustability of the functions is not very user-friendly.
The one I purchased did not work and has been returned. While reading the instructions, I noticed I did NOT need to purchase the "Honeywell RPWL3045A1003/A Wireless Premium Portable Converter/Extender/Push Button" to make this work (opposed to what the Amazon web site says).Another review complains about having to open it up to switch it from day/night operation. Seriously, if you don't already know this when you put the battery in you are not thinking. I have motion sensors (with lights) around the home and this is less complicated than those.
