Ames True Temper 1190700 4-Pound 36-Inch Fiberglass Handle Wood Splitter Maul Reviews

    1. I can split with little effort and have yet to need a sledge on logs up to 14" in diameter. I love this maul.

    2. This splitting maul combines the characteristics of an axe and a maul but what you end up with is the worst of both worlds. Perhaps it would work on lesser hardwoods but in my experience with rock maple and northern red oak, it would just get stuck in the end grain without splitting the log.The sharp, narrow edge is probably to blame as it penetrates about a quarter to half inch but the flares are too far up the face of the blade to have any real splitting power. A standard maul would be a better choice. The only real upside is that it is so light that it's easy to swing.I should also point out that the fiberglass handle cracked up near the head. I never had an overstrike so I presume there was a factory defect in the handle. Fortunately, my local retailer gave me full credit so I'm going to buy a regular Ames maul with a hickory handle. Lifetime warranties are nice except when you have to use them a few months after purchase.
