Black & Decker SPCM1936 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Self-Propelled Lawn Mower With Removable Battery Reviews

    1. Pros: Lightweight and ergonomiclly designed. Quiet and extremely easy to use. The highth adjustment is rediculously easy to use as is the self propelled function. Easy to clean and cuts a standard lawn well. Mulches, bags, and rear discharges equally well. Cons: Lacking in brute power. The self propulsion doesn't go slow enough for certain circumstances and it lags a bit. It takes a few seconds to get up to full speed. The safety button that allows you to engage the cutting function isn't easy to find without looking for it. It could use being raised slightly or textured to be found by feel. The cutting function bale has a very light spring and the blade can stay cutting once you let go. The charging port is in an akward area to use and you must bend over to insert the charging cord. While these are concerns, there is nothing glaringly bad about the mower. The mower comes almost completely built and 5 minutes is all that's needed to unpack the mower from the box, assemble it, and plug it in. My battery was also almost completely charged and was showing a green light (Ready for use) in about 8 minutes of charging. My first use was after a brutal rain storm. I had given the lawn about 6 hours to dry out and it had been growing for 2 weeks. It was 6 inches high in several patches and the grass was very wet. I was curious as to how well the mower would cut though. I was, in a word, impressed. The mower cuts quietly and rolls easily along with either the power propulsion or just a push. I ran into the taller sections where I had to back up and go over the same area twice but that was to be expected, even with a gas mower. It would have helped had I raised the mower to it's full highth but I kept it at level 3 (Out of 7, 7 being the highest). I was bagging here and the mower picked up all of the trimmings. I was able to finish my larger than standard tract home lawn in one charge, even with the wet grass. The mower bogs down just like a gas mower will however it will bog easier. I was cutting bermuda grass/clover. My second use was today, 6 days later and the lawn was still in good shape from the last mowing. Plus, it was much drier. I started out bagging and this time, the mower breezed through everything with no problems. I was able to mow with one pass over everything and the motor barely struggled through the highest areas. Halfway through, I emptied the bag and switched to the mulch function (Just the turn of a nob). The mower functioned better than I expected, leaving no clumps of clippings yet not bogging down either. I finally went after some foot tall weeds with the rear discharge function. The motor, as expected, bogged down and I had to back off and make several passes to get a clean cut. I ended up with a cleanly mowed area with clumps of clippings, expected with such tall weeds. I noticed several things: The charging connectors, while fragile looking, are actually quite stout. I use these same connectors in an industrial application and have no worries about them. I don't expect them to fail for a very long time, if ever. The mower can be hard to turn or pull back unless you push the mower forward several inches to allow the self propulsion to dissengage. Once dissengaged, the mower is easy to manuver and actually, lighter than my old snapper. It only took me a few turns before I figured this out and now, it's easy to release the self propulsion bale and let the mower travel several inches before trying to turn or reverse. Wet soggy grass will build up on the underside of the mower and also in the discharge chute if the bag is too full for the clippings to be expelled into it. I ended up flipping the mower on its side and scraping the buildup off with a piece of scrap wood, then continuing with my mowing. You shouldn't have this problem with a properly dry lawn. Rinsing the underside of the mower before you put it away is advised because the buildup will come off much easier if it is fresh, verses dried and stuck on. In closing, I am happy with this mower and the job it has done so far on my lawn. People who have St. Augustine type lawns or larger than a normal tract home lawn will probobly be better suited with a gasoline engined mower. These battery powered mowers are getting much closer in performance to their gas engined cousins but still have a long way to go. For those that have a hard time starting a gasoline mower, who dislike the fumes and maintainance, or (like me) am interested in a newer technology, then the battery powered black and decker may be the mower for you. The only reason I felt this mower deserved 4 stars instead of 5 was the lack of power for thick st. augustine type lawns. ****One year update**** No failures to report, no strange noises or hiccups. I've sharpened the blade exactly once for the beginning of this season and the mower continues to cut as it did since day one. I have managed to wear down the battery during one cutting session. The grass had gotten extremely tall over 3 weeks last summer and as soon as I noticed the mower losing performance, I rolled it back in the garage and charged it up overnight. The next morning, I finished the lawn with no problems. It picks up the clippings very well while bagging, even when cutting mildly wet lawn. The self propulsion works as well as it ever has and I love it. I only bag now, forgoing the mulching or rear discharge for the ease of emptying the bag in my green waste trashcan. I occasionally will flip the lever to mulch, just to make sure it still works. It has gotten stiff over the year of use and could probobly use some lubricant like WD40, etc. on the hinge. I can use my hand to help the flap into place though (Carefull to disconnect the power as you must reach in near the blade). I added a braided wire lanyard as some other reviewers have posted about. The key on the end of the lanyard is convenient and I don't have to search for it. I'm still very happy with my purchase and still recommend this lawn mower to anyone looking for a mower for small to average lots. I have no regrets about buying this mower over a gasoline powered mower

    2. PROS: No cord, gas or smoke, easy to adjust cutting height, only minor assembly required, seems well-built and designed, quiet, 36 volts.CONS: Heavy at 75 lbs., flimsy charger plug and wire, more difficult to turn because of length, made mainly out of plastic - although this may not be so bad in the long run if you live in a humid area.I would recommend the self-propelled version mainly because of the mower's heavy weight. The rear drive wheels are great for going up an incline, but take a bit of getting used to. You can't just push down on the handle bar and raise the front wheels slightly off the ground to make a quick turn. After you learn to quickly connect and disconnect the drive wheels as you mow and turn, it becomes much easier. You just have to learn to work with it, rather than force it to go your way.I like how the drive wheels slip gradually into gear, (nice!) but the slowest forward speed is not slow enough for cutting through tall grass unless you mow the lawn twice at different cutting heights - which the manual recommends. With a mower like this, (or any electric mower I suppose) you cannot directly compare it with gas-powered mowers with 3-4 times the horse power. But this is a great alternative and most probably the trend all mowers will eventually follow. The manual states that it takes 12 hours to charge, but for me it charged in half that time. The charging times will probably increase as the years go by until the battery needs to be replaced. They also recommend that it remain plugged-in all the time - I assume to prolong battery life. Because of its weight, turning the mower on to its side to clear an obstruction may take some doing. Again, that's to be expected. Please don't assume this to be a negative review. This is a different kind of mower which can't be directly compared with a gasoline-powered machine. So far, I am quite pleased with this purchase.

    3. I have used many mowers in my time and this is the best mower i have ever used. The weight of the mower for me makes it perfect because it is easy to use and move around.you can use the self propelled feature when the mower is not on makes putting it away great.I live in Oregon so the grass is thick and wet and the mulching feature was so good that i did not need to the bag the grass. The charger to me works great no problems.I have a very big yard and i only used little less than half the battery power. The plastic is very well made and makes the mower light and seems to hold up very well.I give this mower a all around A++++ and will never go back to gas again

    4. I've just had this mower for a few uses and I really like it.My biggest concern was the "range" of the mower. ie, would 1 battery charge hold out for the entire lawn?Answer - yes! With a little power to spare.I'd estimate the area I mow to be about 7500 sq ft. The front has a 6' slope down to the road, which is easy enough to mow side to side. Back is fairly level. When I'm done, the batt indicator is on the lowest level, but enough juice to self propel up the hill into the garage for recharge. I have St Augustine grass, a fairly heavy body grass to mow.Since I mow my grass 1x per week, I haven't checked to see how long it takes to charge the battery. I just plug it in and it's ready the next time. The battery can be charged in or out of the mower. So if you had a 2nd battery, it could be charged while using the mower. Battery technology is sealed lead acid. I'm guessing an AGM type maintenance free.Pros- Single point height adjustment is VERY simple to use- Mower is pretty quiet, I won't feel like I'm disturbing my neighbors if I mow early in the morning or late in the evening when its cooler (in Texas).- Mulches well, I haven't bagged any grass yet- Worked out of the box, just had to attach the handle and charge.- I like the plastic body. It does flex slightly, but does not feel flimsy at all. Leaves no concern about rust over the long haul and hasn't shown any staining from the fresh cut grass.- No Gas / oil to buy, store nor smell.- No pull "starting" the mower, just press the handle and it goes.- Seperate actuation handles for blade rotation and self propelled wheel movement.- Mower handle is curved up, makes it easy on the wrists while mowing.- Variable self propelled speeds are nice. The control to change the speed is easy to access. Going up the hill the slowest speed is too slow, but its easy to to just slide to control to faster. The fastest is great for transporting it back to the garage. I don't mow at that speed. When the self propel starts, it has a gradual start up so the mower does not jerk into motion.- Battery installation was very easy, goes in from the top.Cons -- The charger connection interface should be simpler and it would be nice if it used a standard molex connector of some sort. The one that comes with it is custom and was tricky to get in the socket.- There is a safety key that enables the mower to run, and it also plugs into the charger socket (so you can't charge and run at the same time). It was tricky to insert as well.- There is only 1 safety key. Lose it and .... I wish it came with a 2nd key. I tied the one I have to the mower handle so I don't lose it. The key does have a place to put a lanyard.

    5. I bought this mower because it got mostly good reviews on Amazon and had a recommended review on Consumer Reports. I must say I was very excited about the prospect of having a lawn mover that was not only environmentally friendly, but quiet as well! After unpacking the mower and putting it together, thats where my excitement ended.I have a relatively small yard and with the 1/3rd of an acre claim by the product description, that should meet more than enough power to handle my entire yard. I began mowing and noticed immediately that the blades were having trouble keeping speed thru my grass. It would shut off in thicker areas or drag down so low that it wasn't cutting. Still, if I backed off and pushed forward again, it would cut the lawn. After completing three rectangular rows around my front lawn using the self propelled off and on, the battery begain to show signs of draining. So I shut off the mower and checked the battery indicator light. Sure enough, it was down to the last arrow. It took me three full charges just to finish the front lawn. When heading to the back yard I decided not to use self propelled to see if that extended battery life. I was able to complete 75% of the back lawn on one charge without using the self propelled functionality. Still two charges to finish the small back yard, but better performance. Please note my grass is Bahia, a thicker tropical grass. If you have Rye grass or some other thin grass, you may have better results. But with the small size of my lawn, I thought it would have met my needs as well.Unfortunately, I have had to return the mower after 1 full yard mowing. As much as the idea of a quiet mower that doesn't use grass entices me, spending 3 days to mow the lawn does not!

    6. I am about 5"2' (female) and have used a mowing service for quite a while. My husband and I work and with a special needs toddler underfoot (and the fact my husband hates lawn work)it seemed like the best option. I admit-I got lazy. Now the toddler is a tween taller than I and I kept meaning to purchase a decent electric mower. Nothing really fit my needs....until now. We have a walk-out home. Our side and back yard are fairly steep.I hate dealing with 1)oil+gas, 2)shoulder wrenching power cords, 3)loud noise where I cannot hear my pager and 4) straining to push a mower up the hill with risk of slippage. With all the great reviews I came super close to buying the CM1936 last year but other events delayed that purchase. Late February of this year I spotted this model and bought it in March with few reviews posted. I was finally able to use it this weekend and I am quite pleased. No oil or gas and although it is not completely silent, it is reasonable and I can listen to music or audio books on my mp3 player. With time I am sure I will feel more comfortable with increasing the speed but the turtle speed did just fine for me. Very easy to put together and the start up was quite simple. The grass was kind of high and damp so I did have to stop and clean the grass out a couple of times-not complicated at all. The self propelled was great going up my hills. The mower with battery in is heavy but I did not notice this at all during the mowing process. I also like that the blades can be off while using the self propel to maneuver back up the hill to the safe garage when done.I also purchased a SquareTrade warranty for my own peace of mind.Update: I have used the mower a few times now and it is truly a labor of love. It takes 30 minutes for my front and about a hour for my backyard. I have improved my technique as I have worked with this mower. So far I am happy with the battery life and power. I have noticed waiting until the lawn is not wet helps speed things up. I cannot express how much I enjoy listening to music or books while I mow-it really makes me look forward to mowing. I have a very busy week and I love to make the most of my time.Update- The frequent rain has really resulted in heavy usage of this lawn mower. My lawn looks great and I have improved my overall lawn mowing time to 20 minutes for front and 40 for the back. I generally split the days I mow due to time. Now that the weather is heating up I have raised the cutting height (very simple). No big issues so far but I will be using another reviewers advice on spraying the underside of the mower to help with cleaning as the grass mowing windows of opportunity so far do not allow for bone dry grass. Even my yard-work hating husband has eyed my machine and made comments he would like to take it for a spin. We'll see about that...

    7. The Toro gas powered lawn mower is for sale, I have found the perfect replacement.Black and Decker took a real live mower deck, added the right sized electric motor with a big beefy battery, and made a really good grass cutting machine. What's not to love about this lawn mower? There is virtually no vibration from the mower. It makes about half as much noise as a gasoline engine mower. It starts up with the push of a button and pull of a lever. It moves itself around my yard with the flip of another lever. It mulches, bags, or rear discharges with the twist of a knob. It will never rust. It recharges in about an hour. It costs pennies to run. It costs nothing per year in maintenance. I never have to carry around a gas can ever again. So far, the only thing I can find wrong with this mower, it takes a few seconds to get moving and you have to kind of anticipate stopping or backing up - the drive wheels lock if you pull back too quickly.Yes this is a very heavy lawn mower at ninety pounds, most of that weight is the battery, (around twenty pounds); except it doesn't feel that heavy in use or storage. The handle is long enough that leverage makes it easy to lift the front wheels to turn the mower. The vertical storage shown in the pictures looks like a joke, but in fact is really sweet. The mower takes up about two feet by three feet on the floor. Folding the handle over is fast and easy, pull two levers and fold the handle. The mower is now very easy to tip up vertically on the handle mount.Assembly was really simple; attach the handle with two 1/2 inch bolts. If using the grass catcher, the metal frame has to be clipped to the nylon bag. It might be a good idea to download the owner's manual at Black and Decker's website - the unboxing instructions are handy to read before getting this big old box.The instructions recommend fully charging the battery for twelve hours before using the mower. My battery had just about 2/3 of a charge in it, so I decided to just mow the lawn right a way. That was more than enough charge for my postage stamp yard (fifteen minutes maximum mowing time). The AC adapter looks like a laptop power adapter - a small box in the middle of an AC cord and a fairly long 36V cord. While charging the pilot light on the box is red. Once the battery if fully charged the lamp turns green. On the battery itself there are three green lights indicating 1/3 charge increments. Press the I button and the state of the charge shows up.My big concern about this was charging the 36V battery; would it take a dedicated circuit and tons of electricity to charge this beast? Not at all, the charger is 45 Watts - less than a light bulb. I connected the first charge to a Kill-A-Watt meter. It took and hour and 0.13 Kilowatts of electricity to go from zero charge to all three lights. At ten cents a Kilowatt, this is one cheap lawn mower to run. Of course a twelve hour charge will use more electricity, but we're still talking about pennies of electricity.I've used a lot of lawn mowers in my lifetime from silly corded eclectic to monster two bladed walk behind mowers. This mower has the good solid feel of the Hondas from fifteen or twenty years ago and the current mid range Toro's. The problem with the old electric mowers, they had silly light small decks that couldn't really cut grass. Black and Decker has designed a mower deck that is deep with a blade that spins fast enough to suck the grass up and cut it cleanly. All this without any engine noise, vibration, and smell. The deck is a plastic material. This might seem like a bad idea, why not make it out of steel like all other lawn mowers. Well the good news with an eclectic, there's no intense vibration from the motor, so steel is not necessary. The wheels are much wider than my Toro. The weakest point is probably the front axle which looks a bit thin. The self propulsion is a completely separate motor driving a differential at the rear. The drive mechanism looks sufficiently solid. With the blade turned off, the drive motor sounds like an electric R/C car - a noise I like.Cut height is adjusted with a single squeeze bar at the right rear of the mower. It's pretty darn quick and easy to squeeze that handle, lift up or push down to change the mower height. A lot of higher end new mowers have the same system.I really like the lever to change from mulching to rear discharge. There are no plugs or accessories to mess with. The knob flips a door inside the mower deck. In the mulch direction the door closes off the rear discharge chute. When the knob is turned to rear discharge, the door opens the chute. The other cool thing about this mower, to just leave the clippings on the ground, there is a slot at the bottom of the rear door where the grass clippings come out. It's a slick neat trick that avoids the need for a side chute. To bag the grass clippings, flip the rear door up, and then hook the bad on the rear of the mower. There are a few odd moments at first with this thing. In order to start the blade spinning, the safety key has to be inserted, an orange flush button on the right side of the handle has to be pressed in, and the inner handle needs to be pulled back. The first few times I missed that orange button on the side - it's hard to find at first. To engage the self propulsion, push the outer lever forward. It is very easy to mow one handed. The speed is infinitely variable from turtle to rabbit. Turtle is a moderate walk. Rabbit is a very fast walk. I like to push my mower around really fast, and rabbit is just about right on this mower. The other odd moment is the start time for the self propulsion. It takes a one or two count before the mower starts moving. I'm used to turning the mower around, hitting the move lever, and the mower taking off right away. My rhythm was messed up at first. The only other odd moment is something strange with the drive differential. For some reason, if you try to pull the mower back just after releasing the self propulsion lever, the rear wheels will lock. The instructions say to push the mower forward a little bit and the wheels will roll freely. My solution is to just anticipate stop points and release the lever a little bit earlier. The battery is easy to remove. Flip the lever in the front, push a shorter lever back, and lift out the battery. It's funny how they have designed the battery to look a little like a Briggs and Stratton piston motor. There's really no reason to remove the battery. The safety key receptacle is also the charge connector. This mower is ideal for a city or urban lot. I would predict that if it takes around forty five minutes to an hour to mow your lawn with a gas powered mower, this mower will work out perfectly. A bigger lawn would probably require a spare battery. Fortunately they are available from Amazon and are not terribly expensive. It is true, a gas powered mower will cut through two or three foot high grass. But how often have I ever had to mow grass that tall? Once in my life. If you keep on top of mowing your lawn, not cutting much more than 1/3 or 1/2 the height of a grass blade, this mower has more than enough power to cut grass. I did mow through a two inch pile of old leaves from last season. The leaves were pulverized exactly the same as my Toro. The mower slowed down, but never stalled. A rough guess, it seemed to act exactly like my Toro in this situation. The advantages to me are huge. I'll never pay a hundred dollars to have this mower tuned up and oil changed. I might have to replace a battery one day. Maybe the drive motor will break - but I'll still be able to mow the lawn by pushing the mower (it does move easily even though it is pretty heavy). I'll never have to visit a gas station again with a gas can. And my carbon footprint just got a lot smaller. In fact, I might just have fun mowing my lawn because this lawn mower makes so little noise and is vibration free. The Toro is for sale. I'll never go back to a gasoline engine lawn mower.

    8. This thing is awesome. It did my medium sized front yard with a reported full charge left and my big backyard before showing near empty. The mulching works great and the variable speeds are truly from turtle to rabbit, not just pictures. I am all praise on this machine. It will be interesting to note the battery life at then end of a season of charges and discharges. This will be the final test.

    9. I just replaced my large gas mower for this model and I couldn't be happier with it. I thought I'd have to sacrifice something for the advantages of electric but I found this mower superior in every way. It cuts perfectly, it's easy to use, and it was more manuverable than my self propelled gas mower. In addition it has the obvious advantages of less noise, less mess, fewer moving parts, and less pollution. If you have a relatively small level lawn, this is perfect.

    10. I used my little gas powered rototiller in my garden plot last week and thought my shoulders were going to fall off my torso, not so much from the tilling, but from pulling that darn cord to get the motor going. So, when the Black & Decker SPCM1936 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Self-Propelled Lawn Mower With Removable Battery arrived, I was excited, but not so eager to open the box and give it a whirl. My first impression was that the 104 pound box had so many dings in the entire edge of the box that it could not possibly be intact, but the lawn mower was unaffected. Inside the box was a plastic bag containing the charger, B&D orange key, assembly guide and warranty, and last but not least, the instruction sheet for removing the mower from the carton. Wish those directions had been placed outside of the box. Think about it, you can't really lift a mower weighing nearly 95 pounds, you need to cut away the box, and that's what the instructions stated.Assembling the mower is simple, you just need a wrench to attach the 2 bolts which connect the top of the handle to the bottom. A problem existed here because the distance between the two handle bars left a gap which didn't allow for the spring loaded button on one side to fit into either of the 2 holes which kept the handle erect. It just didn't reach the interior bar. We also had the problem of separation and collapsing when the machine was first used, but we bent the handle a tad and hopefully it will continue to hold. This is the only weakness we found in the construction of the lawn mower. The battery arrived with about a third charge and although the battery should be charged before using, but we couldn't resist powering up to make sure it worked before removing the battery and plugging it into the small charger. Three of us were running around like kids at a fair, so excited to have this quiet, dirt free machine which started with the insertion of the key and press of a button. I went first and wasn't too smart, cause I pulled the rear bar right away, not realizing that this was the propulsion bar. I was dragged around for a few seconds while my daughter yelled for me to release the bar! Won't make that mistake a second time. The frontal bar is the one to hold to engage the mower. We then charged the battery and waited to mow. With a fully charged battery, we headed out to mow the lawn, most of which is on a hill. The three of us got together to list what we liked about this lawn mower:1. Handle has a nice feel.2. Easy to start with the key, button and engine bar. Wonderful to not pull a cord! Don't be tempted to pull the propulsion bar until you're ready to get going.3. Extremely easy to maneuver, particularly since a hill is involved in our needs.4. Had no problem mowing over very high grass -- machine did not clog one time, which happens regularly with the gas mower we use. Easy to adjust the height required, but once we set it, made no adjustment. Also didn't falter when mowing over hidden branches or rocks.5. Bag is easy to assemble, attach, remove and empty. Can skip using the bag and the switch is easy to adjust on the mower.6. We remained clean while mowing and this is a first!7. No smell of gasoline. Environmentally better. No need to purchase gas, oil, filters, etc.8. Easy to clean after use, simply fold down the handle, tile the mower onto it's rear, and clean out the debris. Big advantage over gas mower.9. Easy to store, upright if desired.10. Quiet lawn mower!Negatives are:1. Very, very heavy, especially when the battery is installed. MUST have the self-propelled feature on the lawn mower or it's simply too heavy to push. If that feature goes, the machine is worthless for us.2. Expensive lawn mower at retail price. Amazon's current price is about right, maybe a little high still.3. Short battery time on a charge. For a small suburban lawn, this is likely acceptable, but we need to mow nearly an acre, so it took us three days with the battery recharges. Must get a second battery or find out from B&D if there's something wrong with our battery.4. As mentioned earlier, weak design with the spring loaded button attaching the handle.5. Not exactly a negative, but a cautionary comment -- the speed of the self-propelled option is controlled by a lever which is marked by a turtle and a hare as the lowest and highest speed levels. Even the turtle's speed is quite fast, so watch out if you're moving a the speed of the hare!Despite the weaknesses, we love this lawn mower and hope it lives a long life with us. I'll update as we make further discoveries.
