The first thing you need to know about Minwax polyshades is that mineral spirits will take it off when wet, so don't give up hope when you find your project is a mess after applying this stuff. On my project, I found that the polyshades tacked up way too quickly to keep the wet edge that the instructions advise. On properly prerpared poplar (prepped with the Minwax stain prep per instructions) it did not take the stain component well and tacked up before the wood absorbed the stain - basically sat on the wood and did not look good.Polyshades may work better for wood that is already finished and needs some touch up, but after my experience using it, I would never recommend it to anyone I like.Update: I added 2 stars (up from one) because it works well enough when slightly thinned out in a HVLP sprayer. I re-stained it first so it would have some color in the wood, and then applied the Polyshades (since it was already opened I could not return it). It does need to be sprayed on in several thin coats to avoid runs (it runs really easy), and I sanded between coats.Unfortunately the instructions only mention brushing it on, which in my experience just makes a big mess since it tacked up way too fast. I had to remove the polyshades from the first brushed on attempt. I am the type of person who does follow the recommendations on the label so I was not happy that the recommended brush on method produced a really poor result. If the instructions had recommended spraying (which I did not see mentioned on the label), I would have been much happier with the results, and would have saved a great deal of time.
I live in Africa so I order a lot of items that are shipped together by boat and arrive every 2 months. Unfortunately I ordered a quart of minwax oak stain which arrived opened and empty and managed to leak over every other box that was grouped with it.Fortunately the other items I ordered were packaged correctly and I had minimun damage.I really have to ask the seller just what were you thinking shipping a liquid item without proper packaging, It's a stain, use a bag just in case !!!! THINKI recommend that if you really need this just wait and run to the store when you have the chance, if not you could be spending good money and inviting disaster
I used this product to re-finish "This End Up" furniture purhased in 1986 and made from Southern Yellow Pine. It was absolutely fantastic, and provided a finish which was far beyond my expectations.Technique is important. Follow the directions on the can, and i suggest that you apply from late fall through winter when temperatures are not so high to quickly dry the wet edge (assuming you are doing this in a garage or un-heated area).The wood had not been mantained over the past 15-20 years. I dusted and vacummed it clean, and applied a first coat which i allowed to dry for 36 hours. Then i took 0000 steel wool and buffed with medium pressure. Yes, in spots i removed all of the stain.I repeated the above two more times, with decreasing buff-pressure, and added a $2 tack cloth to remove dust.Product self-levels and the finish is excellent. Since this is black, i can't see the wood grain through the stain, other than the texture of wood. I am not sure if other stain colors would work as well, or how this would work on other types of wood, but based upon my results with black on Southern Yellow Pine I would certainly consider to use this in the future.Above all, go sparingly with the application of product....you can always add more!Thanks
